Bienvenido a Mexico

After an 18 hour journey, with a bag way to big and way to heavy, I finally arrived in Mexico City. Although it is my second time here, the view from the plane still takes my breath away. With a population of over 20 million, the city stretches into the distance, as far as the eye can see and city lights sprawl into the hills of extinct volcanoes.

Happily reunited, Pato and I took a taxi to  “La Condesa”, an area popular for its green avenues and hip restaurants and cafés. This where my new “home away from home” will be for the next couple of months. I already love my room; big with a huge closet and private bathroom with its own (very little) tub.

On thursday Pato and I already made our first little trip outside the city to San Miguel de Allende, a small town a few hours away from Mexico City. It’s a very quiet and relaxing place, dotted with churches and trendy colonial style houses.

But of course, travelling is not all I came to do here and so, on monday, I got ready for my first day at work. Woke up at 6.45, got me some breakfast and some Starbucks coffee from the store across my apartment and got mentally prepared to face the immense and chaotic traffic jams of Mexico City. After queuing in a line of some 50 people, all trying to get on a tiny little bus, we set off for “Polanco”, aka the “expatriate area” filled with embassies, fancy design stores and expensive restaurants. Not even one minute into our trip, we got stuck in traffic and cars were having an “I have the loudest horn” competition. Bienvenido a Mexico! 🙂
